How to Use Body Scrub

January 06, 2025

When you want to give your skin the royal treatment, start with a body scrub right in your own shower.

Choose a body scrub that fits your style — sugar, salt, silica, or jojoba beads do the scrubbing while oils, butters, glycerin and other emollients provide moisture.

These ingredients will help to polish and leave your skin beautifully renewed and buffed.

Here are the most frequently asked questions we receive at Thymes about how to use a body scrub:

1. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO USE BODY SCRUB?

You can use body scrubs in the bath or shower. To avoid damaging your skin, make sure your body is thoroughly wet and softened with warm water – overly hot water can dry your skin.

Apply scrub with hands. Cover your body with an adequate amount of body scrub, and using circular motions, massage it into your skin.

Rinse off and follow up with a moisturizing body lotion afterwards.

2. HOW OFTEN SHOULD PEOPLE USE BODY SCRUBS?

Because your skin is delicate, you should only use body scrubs once or twice per week.

If you’ve never used a body scrub before, make sure you test the body scrub on a small patch of your skin.

3. WHAT ARE THE KEY BENEFITS OF USING BODY SCRUBS?

The main benefit of body scrubs is how they aide in removing dead skin cells, which helps promote clearer and softer skin.

The added advantages of using a body scrub can include skin-smoothing benefits; you can enjoy the invigorating and satisfying feeling of a massage in your own home with body scrubs.

4. WHAT ARE THE RECOMMENDED ROUTINES FOR SKIN CARE?

Thoroughly wet skin. Apply exfoliating body scrub with your hands to help remove dead skin cells.

Rinse off your skin. Pat your skin dry and immediately apply a moisturizing body lotion to help lock in moisture.

5. IS IT IMPORTANT TO APPLY BODY LOTION AFTER USING A BODY SCRUB?

Anything you apply on your skin after using a body scrub will be absorbed more rapidly.

Applying a hydrating body lotion is the most important after-scrub product to help seal moisture in your skin.

6. WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY TO USE BODY SCRUBS TO HELP RELIEVE DRY SKIN?

Body Scrubs are great for exfoliating dry skin because they remove the dry, dead skin cells and help you to nourish the fresh, new skin underneath.

The result is soft, glowing skin all over. When you want to use a body scrub to help relieve your dry skin, the most important part is using a moisturizing body scrub and following up with a moisturizing body lotion.

This two-step approach is key in helping to relieve your dry skin.

7. WHEN SHOULD I NOT USE A BODY SCRUB?

If your skin is irritated in any way – particularly if you have a sunburn or rash, you should not use a body scrub.

The scrub can irritate the skin even more and make the healing process your skin needs to go through last even longer.

In these situations, use a body wash instead and follow up with a good layering of body lotion to help your skin recover.

8. HOW DO YOU USE BODY SCRUBS BEFORE MANICURES AND PEDICURES?

To get the most out of your manicure and pedicure, exfoliate your hands and feet with body scrubs before going to the spa or salon.

To help elongate the effects of your manicure or pedicure, continue using body scrubs about once a week. This will help keep your skin smooth.

9. SHOULD YOU USE A BODY SCRUB BEFORE OR AFTER SHAVING?

Use body scrubs before shaving to avoid a stinging sensation on irritated skin. As always, be sure to use a moisturizing body lotion after shaving.

At Thymes, we love body scrubs. They help to reveal the natural glow of your skin by exfoliating, buffing, and moisturizing your skin. Next time you’re in the shower, treat your skin to a nice body scrub from Thymes.

About Thymes Candles

  • With fragrances and designs developed to live and flourish in homes, our unique offerings are truly one of a kind.
  • Formula development and rigorous testing is done in-house by our experienced group of female chemists.
  • In order to confidently introduce new fragrances and products to you, we make sure to test them in our homes first. We must love it before we pass it along to you.
  • Thymes fragrances are hand-selected with passion and care by our in-house fragrance experts.
  • Our candles, are developed using a high-quality wax and cotton wicks that help to refine and enhance the fragrance experience.
  • We craft the precise formulation between fragrance, wax composition, and wick to ensure optimal fragrance delivery.

Your First Lighting

  • When you are getting ready to burn your new candle, trim candle wick to 1/4”.
  • Make sure your candle is placed away from other objects and onto a safe, heat proof surface, and at least 3 inches apart from other candles when burning.
  • Light your candle with a match or lighter.
  • It’s best to let your candle burn until the liquified wax reaches most of the circumference of the top before extinguishing! This is very important for your first lighting, as this will help the wax burn the same way after each lighting.
  • Enjoy!

Trim that wick.

  • Did you know that trimming your wick before EVERY lighting will help make your candle burn longer? Besides safety reasons, candle performance will be enhanced when the wick is at the correct length.
  • Wick trimmers or scissors are ideal when removing the top of your wick. Wick should be approximately 1/4” before every lighting.
  • Let your candle burn!
  • Before extinguishing your candle, liquified wax should reach most of the circumference of your candle each time, if possible.
  • We recommend letting your candle burn at least 1 hour for every 1” diameter.
  • Snuffers act as a great tool to extinguish your candle, but you can also gently blow the flame out, as well.

Debris free.

  • Keep your candle wax clear of matches, wick trimmings or dust to avoid unexpected flare ups.
  • When wax has hardened, turn your candle upside down to empty out wick trimmings or anything else that’s fallen into the wax.

Safety first.

  • A lit candle is an open flame, so remember to always practice basic rules of fire safely at all times. Make sure to always keep candles within sight when burning.
  • Keep them out of reach of children and pets, and always avoid drafts.
  • Allow your candle to cool down before handling. Do not move or touch it when wax is liquified.
  • If you’re going to use a candleholder, make sure it’s specifically designed for this use and is heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any melted wax or drips.
  • Know when to stop burning your candle.
  • Discontinue burning your candle when 1/2” wax remains at the bottom of the container. This protects surfaces from the heat of the candle.
  • Extinguish your candle if the flame becomes too high, smokes or flickers often. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check for drafts before re-lighting.

Get creative!

  • Thymes candle containers are perfectly crafted for reuse! Try repurposing by adding a plant inside, using it as a pen holder, or a beautiful catch-all!
  • Make sure wax cools off. The wax and wick should be easy to scoop out and remove from the candle container. You may need a tool to dig it out, such as a spoon or butter knife. After this, remove remaining wax by wiping with a paper towel, then hand wash with warm, soapy water to remove any other excess wax. Dry the container out with a towel.

Thymes 40th Anniversary

September 12, 2022

Allow us to Introduce Ourselves

For 40 years, Thymes has offered carefully crafted bath & body, home fragrance, and home care products that strive to make time more special through exceptional fragrance experiences and thoughtful design.

As a founding brand of the fragranced bath and body category, we continue to be inspired to create products that not only enhance the skin and the senses but also offer the chance for customers to take time for themselves. The ultimate gift.

How Thymes Came to Be

Thymes grew out of the simple love of nature, a passion for art, and the desire to help others find beauty and balance in their lives. These characteristics still hold true today and guide our product innovation strategy.

In 1982, our founder had a passion for understanding ingredients used in beauty products and grew unsatisfied with what she found. From there, she began hand-crafting fragrant products in her small kitchen from ingredients she would grow herself, purchase at the farmer’s market, or found in specialty shops.

Using her life savings and business knowledge she gained from running an art gallery, she converted her gallery space into a showroom featuring her beautiful, hand-made bath salts, potpourri, and sachets. Soon, the gallery was packed with customers and everything on display was purchased. In that moment, Thymes was born.

Product and Formulation Philosophy

Fragrance: With each product, fragrance is at the forefront. Our goal is to create fragrances that are familiar yet intriguing, complex yet balanced, and subtle yet lingering. Each scent is designed to reveal layers of fragrance notes that unfold even as you first pick up a candle, spritz on a countertop spray, or pump the beginnings of your body wash.

The fragrance’s initial throw, character, and longevity is tested to determine overall experience and effectiveness. Whether your scent preference is fresh, floral, citrus, warm, or spicy, our fragrances are sure to have you coming back for more.

Formulation: We strive to use natural, plant-based products from renewable and sustainable sources whenever possible. Rooted in nature, our highly effective formulas are skin-compatible and free of parabens, SLS/SLES, and phthalates. Finally, Thymes products are tested on people, never on animals.

Experience: Every touch point of the Thymes product experience is thoughtfully considered. From the design of the packaging and its visual appeal to the unique fragrance experience and formulations that are both naturally derived and highly effective, our products are sure to take your senses on a journey.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, which is why attention to detail is paramount. Each element of our products is meticulously curated through our team of in-house designers and innovation strategists. From the multidimensional hues and inviting red color palette of the Simmered Cider Diffuser carton, to the height of Goldleaf Bubble Bath, and the shape of the Lemon Leaf Large Hand Wash glass bottle are all examined when creating our products. It takes many rounds of creative reviews and sampling by our talented team to ensure our products delight you with each use.

As much as the look and feel of the product is of utmost priority, each product is tested by our team to achieve a phenomenal usage experience. You’ll notice the Eucalyptus Hand Cream bursts and lingers with layers of invigorating eucalyptus, crisp Italian lemon, lemongrass and lush fir, while the shear butter formula is ultra-hydrating, creamy, and never greasy.

We take pride in our product innovation process, which is why we are filled with joy when we see our customers love the products just as much as we do.

Iconic Fragrances Standing the Test of Time

As we’ve grown into the company we are today, many beloved fragrances have come and gone but many have remained, becoming true icons in the line.

Goldleaf, Eucalyptus, Lavender, and Mandarin Coriander are some of our earliest collections and have become some of our most popular, many being staples in our customers’ lives for over 30 years. And not to mention, the quintessential holiday fragrance, Frasier Fir first launched in 2004, captured the hearts of so many, and has become woven into annual holiday traditions.

A Thank You

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for these 40 years together. It is our passion to bring you inspiring fragrances and designs that ultimately create connection with yourself, nature, and your loved ones. The best is yet to come, and we’re delighted to have you, our customers, alongside us on this journey.
